Fleet Science Center set for $14.6M upgrade in Balboa Park

Reuben H Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park Photo by Chris Stone Times of San Diego The Fleet Science Center is embarking on a million transformation of its historic Balboa Park building urgent ground in September with completion expected in spring Throughout construction the Fleet will remain open continuing to offer exhibitions IMAX films and citizens programs The renovation will increase population access exhibit space by within the existing footprint and reconfigure the interior to improve flow create flexible scheme areas and expand opportunities for hands-on exploration Key updates include restoring the building s entrance to its original location expanding the Craveology Caf adding a dedicated queuing and concessions area for the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater and transforming the current rotunda into a multi-use gallery A new free-to-the-public entrance gallery and a reconfigured lower-level gallery will further extend the Fleet s region reach according to a news release This project follows the completed first phase of the Science Starts Here campaign the modernization of the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater In November the Fleet replaced its mm film projection system the world s first and longest-running IMAX projector with the IMAX Next Generation with Laser system Upgrades also included a new sound system planetarium utility seating and enhanced accessibility The venture expanded offerings to include documentaries Hollywood films live performances and immersive planetarium shows Visitors will continue to enjoy the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater and a full calendar of educational programs and events throughout construction Renovation updates will be available on the Fleet s website and social media channels including behind-the-scenes content and opportunities for locality engagement With more than annual visitors the Science Starts Here Capital Campaign ensures the Fleet will continue building on its -year legacy as an innovative and accessible hub for science learning in San Diego For more information or to encouragement the campaign visit fleetscience org renovation
