San Diego Unified readies plan to build 1,500 homes for teachers on five sites

School board members with a rendering of workforce housing at a press conference in March Photo courtesy of San Diego Unified Administrators at the San Diego Unified School District say they re ready to move forward with plans to build nearly units of affordable housing for teachers on five school properties The proposal to begin work with three developers is scheduled for a vote at the Dec meeting of the school board We are ready to take the next step toward building affordable housing to advocacy our educators declared Superintendent Fabi Bagula Building affordable housing and the district retaining ownership of the land to collect annual lease revenue strengthens our schools and the surrounding San Diego neighborhoods Representatives have selected San Diego-based Affirmed Housing and Bridge Housing along with Culver City-based Decro Corp to develop the properties The five sites are Eugene Brucker Tuition Center Normal Street units Revere Center Gifford Way units Fremont Ballard Center Congress Street units Instructional Media Center Cardinal Lane units Commercial Street units No district funds will be spent and leaders anticipate receiving million in lease revenue over years Other benefits include construction of two daycare centers and improvements to adjacent school properties In March the school board voted to allow district staff to develop and request proposals to develop the five properties The district is seeking to create affordable housing for of its workforce over the next decade
